Peach Trees

There is nothing better than picking and eating a fresh peach.  Peaches are considered the “Queen” of the fruits and second only to apples in popularity as a deciduous tree fruit because of their fine flavor.  Preferred uses include fresh eating, sugared and with cream. They are also used in ice cream, pies, cobbler, jam and preserves. Fresh peaches provide significant amounts of the antioxidant vitamins A and C in addition to potassium and fiber.  Cross pollination is not required with peaches as they are self-fertile.

Peach Tree Types

  • Contender

Known for being cold-hardy and having excellent disease resistance, the Contender peach was developed at NC State University.  Consistently yields large crops of sweet, juicy medium-to-large fruit. The yellow, aromatic flesh is perfect for eating fresh, canning, or freezing. It is a freestone peach that blooms late in the spring with abundant showy pink blossoms. It is self-pollinating, but adding another pollinator nearby may increase the size of your crop. 1000 chill hours.

  • Early Elberta

After a showy spring display of fragrant pink flowers, this self-fruitful  variety produces delicious freestone peaches. The fruit is large with mostly yellow skin with some blush tones. Early Elberta peaches are juicy with yellow flesh and rich flavor, great for fresh eating, canning, and freezing.  The Elberta is the most sought after and popular peach in America, ripening in July in our area. Requires 800 chill hours.

  • Redhaven

This popular variety is known for being a top producer of medium-sized peaches. Fragrant, pink flowers blossom in the spring. When the fruit ripens in July, you’ll enjoy bushels of sweet peaches with almost fuzzless skin over firm, creamy-textured yellow flesh. These freestone peaches are great as a fresh snack or for canning and freezing. Redhaven is heavy-bearing and easy to grow and maintain. The branches have a spreading nature, and this variety is disease-resistant to leaf spot. It is a self-pollinating fruit tree, making it great for smaller gardens and backyard orchards.  Mature height 12'-15'.
